Every Kilometer adds Rs 12 to the meter. From airport to Thamel or Durbarmarg or Lazimpat or Chakrapath it should not cost you more than Rs 350. Cabs at the airport are hesitant to go by the meter readings, so give them whatever they are offering from Rs 350 to 400 which is fine to reach to any of the city areas within Kathmandu valley. Due to high gas prices, additional charges may be added to your final taxi fare. Generally speaking, a taxi should not cost you more than ten dollars payable in local currency (Approximately Seven Hundred Nepalese Rupees) to travel from corner to corner within the same city in Nepal. Taxi driver's often make their own rules and prices for going to a place. If possible, try to get a taxi driver that will use his taxi meter. Even so, taxi drivers can use the longest road to reach your final destination and make more money out of you if you don't know the place and there is also the probability of tampering with the meter which is found to be very common in Nepal. If you notice anything suspicious, you can call the police. Best taxi deals are those offered by your hotel, get hold of one. They have fixed rates, reliable and secure.
