Home - Travel Information - Nepal FAQ What's Nepal's Night life like?

Life in villages is pretty much alive during the day time but as soon as sun goes down everybody's back to their shelter because of unrest in the country and fear of maoist attacks. Besides poor rural Nepalese work all day long and the evening is just time to rest. Everybody just goes home and have a quiet evening, this is much the same in city areas except in places like Kathmandu, Pokhara and Dharan where tourism driven businesses like restaurants, shopping centers, clubs, bars and disco staying open late, makes some night life to talk about. Average closing time of shops and restaurants is around 9:00 PM. throughout Nepal but in many places shops close as earlier as 6:00 P.M.

Night life in city is mainly for rich family and tourists alike. Due to ongoing war in the country, many tourists feel safer spending little time outside at night.

In cities, its hard to get a public transportation such as city buses after certain hours specially during night time when everything stops and the only thing available is taxi - which is very expensive. In fact in Kathmandu, You will be lucky if you can get a bus after 7:00 P.M. But, buses for long route say like Buses from Kathmandu to Pokhara are available from bus stations but most of them require prior booking otherwise you will be traveling sitting on the floor with a goat on your lap!

In tourist areas like Thamel of Kathmandu, there are restaurants from Chinese to Japanese to American - you name it! There are handful of shopping centers stay open late. Internet (Cyber) Cafes busy serving to tourists checking up on their Yahoo or Hotmail stuff keeping in touch with people back home, and the gift shops more than the hairs in your head - all bright, attractive and tempting and the strolling of people on the crowded but pleasant street, all come as a package tour to Nepal! - Free!
